A recent needs assessment mission in Sierra Leone has paved the way for the implementation of a Maritime Single Window (MSW) system at the Port of Freetown. This centralized digital platform aims to enhance the exchange of information regarding ship arrivals, port stays, and departures, ultimately reducing both time and operational costs.
Starting January 1, 2024, all International Maritime Organization (IMO) Member States must adopt MSW systems to boost global shipping efficiency. The assessment was conducted by IMO consultants, collaborating with the Port of Freetown, relevant ministries, public agencies, and other stakeholders. A stakeholder meeting was held to review and validate the findings.
The outcome will be a comprehensive report guiding the development of the MSW in alignment with IMO principles, including recommendations and proposals for compatible IT tools. Notably, Malaysia’s Transport Minister recently launched a similar MSW system, significantly reducing vessel processing times at Port Klang from five days to mere hours, demonstrating the potential benefits of such systems in enhancing operational efficiency in maritime logistics.
