German shipping line Hapag-Lloyd has secured a significant contract with Chinese shipbuilder CIMC Raffles to build eight dual-fuel methanol containerships, worth over $500 million. This project marks Hapag-Lloyd’s inaugural foray into methanol-powered vessels. Each ship, with a capacity of 4,500 TEU, is set to be delivered between 2028 and 2029 and will incorporate advanced dual-fuel methanol engines. These engines are anticipated to offer up to 30 percent improved efficiency compared to older models, with the fleet collectively projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 350,000 metric tons annually.

This order expands Hapag-Lloyd’s commitment to alternative fuels, complementing its existing fleet of 37 dual-fuel LNG vessels capable of running on biomethane. Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd AG, emphasized that modernizing the fleet aligns with the company’s Strategy 2030, enhancing operational efficiency and reducing reliance on chartering older ships.

In 2024, Hapag-Lloyd initiated additional strategic measures, including a partnership with Seaspan Corporation to convert five containerships to dual-fuel methanol propulsion, along with a green methanol supply agreement with Goldwind for 250,000 metric tons annually. This green methanol aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 70 percent, adhering to sustainability standards. Furthermore, the company has arranged long-term charters for 14 additional new vessels, reinforcing its investment in eco-friendly shipping solutions.

Hapag-Lloyd’s broader sustainability goals involve a one-third reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from its fleet by 2030, with a long-term target of achieving net-zero operations by 2045. With a robust fleet of 305 modern container ships and a global presence of 130 liner services, Hapag-Lloyd continues to solidify its position in the industry while prioritizing sustainability and innovation.
