Greece’s shipping minister has expressed urgent concerns over the safety of international shipping and seafarers amid escalating tensions in the region, which have left numerous vessels stranded in the Strait of Hormuz. This critical waterway, vital for approximately 20% of the world’s oil and gas supply, has faced disruptions for four consecutive days. An official from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards has threatened to attack any ships attempting to navigate through.
As a key player in global shipping, Greece operates one of the largest merchant fleets worldwide. Minister Vassilis Kikilias emphasized the alarming nature of the situation, asserting that global shipping should not be entangled in military conflicts. He underscored the importance of maritime trade for the global economy, asserting that seafarers are not responsible for the geopolitical tensions.
Currently, there are at least 10 Greek-flagged vessels in the Gulf, along with another five nearby, which include many Greek crew members. The shipping ministry has advised vessels to steer clear of the region, prioritizing the safety of crews. Communication remains constant, as officials strive to monitor the well-being of seafarers amidst these troubling circumstances.
Additionally, Greece announced plans to repatriate thousands of its citizens stranded by the conflict, although the closed airspace complicates these efforts.
