The Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG) has addressed complaints about vehicle release delays by enhancing its operational and procedural systems. Since February 2025, over 9,151 vehicles, both new and used, have entered through the port, prompting the need for these improvements. Vehicles can now be cleared within 24 hours after submitting the required documents, thanks to a new system that separates customs procedures from HIPG’s internal payment requests.
Additionally, HIPG has extended the hours at its documentation center, operating until 8:30 p.m. on weekdays and on Saturdays, with its customer service available until 10:00 p.m. This flexibility allows for more efficient processing of vehicle transfers. A 10-day grace period is also in place, providing importers with time to remove vehicles without incurring storage fees.
To support this increased demand, HIPG has invested in infrastructure upgrades, including a dedicated customs inspection bay and enhanced storage facilities. The port aims to facilitate smooth transitions from port to market and has engaged with industry stakeholders to address ongoing challenges. Recent changes reflect HIPG’s commitment to maintaining operational integrity while meeting rising demands in vehicle imports.
