Hambantota International Port (HIP) achieved a significant milestone in January 2025 by introducing High Sulphur Fuel Oil (HSFO) to its bunkering services, alongside other marine fuels like Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) and Marine Gas Oil (MGO/MDO). This enhancement solidifies Sri Lanka’s position in the global maritime sector, enabling HIP to serve a wider range of vessels navigating the busy shipping lanes.
The CEO of Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG), Wilson Qu, expressed delight in launching the HSFO facility, emphasizing HIP’s goal of becoming a key player in the maritime industry. The new HSFO facility boasts a 6,000 cubic meter storage capacity, advanced pumping systems, and strict safety measures, aimed at providing efficient and reliable fuel services. This addition not only expands HIP’s offerings but also reinforces Sri Lanka’s influence as a vital maritime hub in the Indian Ocean region.
HIP’s strategic location on major maritime routes makes it a crucial refueling point for vessels traveling between Europe and Asia. With the addition of HSFO to its fuel portfolio, HIP can now cater to a wider range of vessels, enhancing its competitiveness in the industry. The port’s partnership with Sinopec and certification by Lloyd’s Register further ensures the delivery of top-quality marine fuels and adherence to safety standards. HIP’s commitment to innovation and excellence underscores its dedication to meeting the evolving needs of the global shipping community.
