The grounding of the bulk carrier Ali Aykin in the Øresund last weekend is reportedly more severe than first thought, according to Sweden’s coast guard. A dive inspection has confirmed that the vessel has sustained hull damage and is taking on water.

On Sunday morning, Ali Aykin was en route from Gdansk, Poland, to Setubal, Portugal, when it veered off the designated shipping lane and ran aground on a charted shoal near the Øresund Bridge. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or spills, though the ship contains approximately 18,000 gallons of diesel fuel, prompting authorities to monitor potential pollution risks.

Following the incident, one crew member was arrested for gross negligence, with reports suggesting that at least one other individual may have been under the influence of alcohol. Investigations are ongoing as officials interview the crew and collect evidence from the vessel.

The hull damage complicates salvage operations. Authorities had initially planned to refloat the ship and tow it to deeper waters when weather conditions permit. However, the risk of further damage or water ingress may necessitate alternative response strategies. As of Tuesday evening, Ali Aykin remained aground, monitored by two Swedish coast guard vessels.
