The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) has released a Recommendation aimed at enhancing safety standards for lifting appliances, aligning with SOLAS regulations for both new and existing equipment. Lifting appliances are crucial for cargo handling and ship operations, yet their limited structural redundancy has historically posed safety risks. To mitigate these dangers, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has introduced mandatory requirements for the design, construction, and operation of lifting appliances, effective from January 1, 2026. These regulations aim to prevent incidents that have led to fatalities and damage to vessels.

The new SOLAS regulations will apply to all lifting appliances installed after January 1, 2026, and to existing ones during their first renewal survey after that date. Regulation II-1/3-13 mandates standards for classification, periodic load testing, and thorough examinations. IACS supports this inclusion, acknowledging the significant boost to maritime safety it provides.

To facilitate consistent global implementation, IACS has developed a comprehensive Recommendation on Onboard Lifting Appliances. This guidance covers distinguishing between new and existing appliances, the application of regulations to various load capacities, and necessary documentation for compliance. The Recommendation also clarifies the classification of lifting appliances and outlines testing and certification procedures, ensuring alignment with SOLAS regulations.
