India and France have strengthened their maritime cooperation to promote peace and security in the Indian Ocean Region. New Delhi is set to assume the chair of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) in 2025 for a two-year term. During a recent Maritime Cooperation Dialogue in New Delhi, officials from both countries agreed to collaborate on assessing threats to maritime security in the IOR. These threats include piracy, armed robbery, maritime terrorism, contraband smuggling, illegal fishing, hybrid and cyber security threats, and marine pollution.
In addition to addressing security challenges, India and France have pledged to work together to ensure free and secure access to sea lanes of communications. This will involve cooperation between their maritime assets and organizations. France, with its territories in the Indian Ocean Region, is a key partner for India in the area. The two countries are committed to enhancing their joint efforts to safeguard maritime interests in the region.
Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met with Secretary-General Anne-Marie Descotes of the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs in Paris. The meeting aimed to prepare for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to France in February for the AI Summit. This high-level engagement underscores the importance that India and France place on their strategic partnership and collaboration in various areas, including maritime security and technology.
