VIKING Life-Saving Equipment has responded to the increasing use of refrigerated containers for shipping combustible cargoes, like lithium batteries, by launching the HydroPen Reefer. This innovative firefighting solution enhances the traditional ‘drill and spray’ method, allowing crews to combat fires directly at their source. Unlike conventional exterior firefighting techniques, HydroPen utilizes water pressure to penetrate the container’s shell, providing a more effective means of extinguishing flames.
Recent reports from the World Shipping Council indicate that over 11% of inspected containers in 2024 showed reporting deficiencies, prompting the introduction of a new Cargo Safety Program aimed at improving the detection of undeclared dangerous goods through AI technology. The Allianz Safety and Shipping Review 2025 highlights that fires and misdeclared cargo remain significant concerns, underscoring the need for improved fire detection and suppression capabilities as the shipping industry evolves.
The HydroPen Reefer is designed to meet the challenges posed by reinforced reefer doors and thick insulated walls, featuring an extended drill and reinforced nozzle to penetrate walls up to 120mm thick. It can also be used in standard dry containers, allowing for versatility in firefighting. Weighing under 10 kg, the HydroPen Reefer is lightweight and can be operated remotely by a single crew member, ensuring quick response to emergencies.
