Mitsui E&S and Taiyo Electric have introduced an Overhang Permanent Magnet Shaft Generating System designed for large marine engines. This innovative system is uniquely mounted at the front of the main engine, contrasting with traditional shaft generators that are installed on intermediate shafts. This placement minimizes disruptions to engine room layouts and hull designs, enhancing fuel efficiency and energy-saving capabilities for vessels.
The system’s design allows for the engine and generator to be packaged together, streamlining installation and reducing the workload for shipyards. Utilizing a permanent magnet generator, this system boasts higher efficiency, a compact structure, and a lightweight build compared to conventional wound-rotor generators. Additionally, fewer components require periodic replacement, which enhances overall maintainability.
Beyond traditional power generation (PTO), the system also supports engine-assist operation (PTI), allowing the generator to function as a motor. This feature provides extra propulsion power when needed, ensuring stable vessel operation in adverse weather conditions or during acceleration. Overall, this development represents a significant advancement in marine engine technology, promising improved performance and operational efficiency.
