Norwegian technology firm Vissim has secured a contract with a Qatar-based oil and gas operator to implement a vessel collision avoidance system at an undisclosed offshore oil field. This three-year agreement will see Vissim deliver specialized software designed to provide a fully digitized and user-friendly overview of vessel traffic in the area.

Vissim’s technology relies on a unique software platform that gathers data from millions of sources, including the Automatic Identification System (AIS). This integration enhances situational awareness, improving maritime safety, security, and operational efficiency.

The vessel collision avoidance system is expected to be operational by the first half of 2026. Benedicte Stiberg, Regional Director for the Middle East at Vissim, emphasized that this initiative exemplifies how digital maritime solutions can boost safety and situational awareness in offshore settings. By utilizing real-time vessel data and analytics, Vissim aims to help the operator better understand vessel activity, thereby enhancing the protection of personnel and assets at the field.
