Nippon Yuka Kogyo Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the NYK Group, has launched BioxiGuard, Japan’s first antioxidant specifically designed for marine biodiesel fuel. Available from August 10, this product represents a significant step forward in sustainable maritime fuel technology. As the shipping industry increasingly turns to biofuels—derived from renewable sources like used cooking oil and grains—to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, challenges related to fuel reliability and efficiency must be addressed.

Biofuels, while promising, have a high concentration of unsaturated fatty acids, making them more susceptible to oxidative degradation than traditional fuels. This oxidation can produce harmful byproducts, such as acids and sludge, which can impair engine performance and cause operational issues, including corrosion and blockages.

To mitigate these risks, Nippon Yuka developed BioxiGuard, which enhances the oxidative stability of marine biodiesel. Laboratory tests showed that adding BioxiGuard at a ratio of 1:500 reduced oxidative degradation by about 50%, extending the fuel’s storage life and improving vessel operations.

Nippon Yuka remains committed to advancing biofuel solutions in marine environments, ensuring that ship operators can adopt sustainable fuels without sacrificing safety or efficiency. The introduction of BioxiGuard highlights the company’s dedication to innovation and environmental responsibility, supporting the maritime industry’s decarbonization efforts.
