Kongsberg Maritime has launched the K-Sim Offshore DP3 Anchor Handling Simulator, a state-of-the-art training solution that aims to set a new standard for operational excellence in the maritime industry. With an investment exceeding £250,000, this simulator is designed to enhance competency standards, improve operational efficiency, and promote sustainability within the sector. Located at Kongsberg Maritime’s Aberdeen office, the simulator responds to the increasing demand for skilled dynamic positioning professionals in offshore oil and gas operations, including drilling, pipe-laying, heavy lift, and emerging floating wind projects. By providing a realistic training environment, the simulator enables operators to practice complex operations and emergency preparedness in controlled conditions, ultimately enhancing safety and reducing reliance on costly on-the-job training.

To support the simulator, Kongsberg Maritime is expanding its instructor team to include three expert Dynamic Positioning Operators by 2025. This move aims to bring a broader range of knowledge and experience to strengthen the training programs offered. Kerry Craig, operations manager at Kongsberg Maritime, highlights the importance of realistic and risk-free training in today’s maritime industry, which faces increasing operational complexity, safety demands, and environmental concerns. The advanced physics-based simulations and hydrodynamic modeling of the K-Sim Offshore DP3 Anchor Handling Simulator allow trainees to operate in various vessel types, locations, and weather conditions, enhancing competency and performance in the field.

Kongsberg Maritime plans to collaborate with local ports and universities to maximize the functionality of the simulator and enrich training programs. While the simulator is primarily designed for onsite training, partnerships with local institutions are expected to contribute to the development of future maritime professionals. By empowering operators with the necessary skills and tools to work smarter, safer, and more sustainably, Kongsberg Maritime aims to drive a significant change in maritime training.
