Lloyd’s Register (LR), HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co., Ltd (HMD), and PanOcean have entered a Joint Development Project (JDP) to design a new Ultramax bulk carrier. This innovative vessel will feature a forward accommodation block, facilitating the integration of various decarbonisation technologies, including fuel cells, alternative fuel engines, wind-assisted propulsion, and carbon capture solutions.

The forward accommodation layout overcomes spatial constraints typical in conventional vessels, allowing for the incorporation of green technologies. This design flexibility also anticipates future regulatory needs, showcasing a commitment to sustainable shipping.

Sung-Gu Park, President of North East Asia at Lloyd’s Register, emphasized that this JDP demonstrates a commitment to practical decarbonisation pathways for the maritime industry. The next-generation Ultramax aims to illustrate how innovation and collaboration can lead to scalable solutions in sustainable shipping.

The JDP was unveiled during Nor-Shipping 2025 in Lillestrøm, Norway. Wind-assisted propulsion is gaining traction among operators; for instance, Berge Bulk’s Newcastlemax bulker, Berge Olympus, has been retrofitted with BARTech WindWings, promising significant fuel savings and reduced CO2 emissions.
