A.P. Moller-Maersk has unveiled the world’s first large fleet of dual-fuel methanol-powered container vessels, representing a major advancement in sustainable ocean transportation. This landmark initiative, which includes vessels servicing ports from Aarhus to Yokohama, highlights a collaborative effort by various industrial partners, aiming to decarbonize the shipping sector.
Collaborating with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and MAN Energy Solutions, Maersk’s fleet also has the support of notable companies like Nestlé, Temasek, and Nike. The dual-fuel ships can operate on both traditional fuels and green methanol, marking a significant shift towards reducing emissions within the maritime industry.
Rather than merely retrofitting existing vessels, Maersk is building a comprehensive fleet of methanol-ready ships, which are now deployed across key global trade routes. This approach reflects a growing consensus among logistics leaders that immediate decarbonization is essential.
The fleet consists of over a dozen large vessels equipped with engines capable of utilizing green methanol, a bio-based fuel with significantly lower lifecycle emissions. To facilitate the transition, Maersk is coordinating with fuel producers and port authorities to ensure sourcing is available at critical locations. Each ship’s naming ceremony served as a public affirmation of this ambitious sustainability initiative.
