Stillstrom by Maersk and the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) have collaborated by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore the use of Stillstrom’s offshore charging technology to reduce emissions from vessels idling in and around the Panama Canal. The Panama Canal, handling approximately 14,000 vessels annually, is a crucial pathway for global commerce. Recognizing its strategic importance, the ACP has been actively working towards decarbonization by implementing incentive programs for lower-emission vessels, investing in water-saving initiatives, and committing to reducing its operational carbon footprint.

Traditionally, ships waiting for transit or at anchor near the Panama Canal burn diesel or heavy fuel oil generators, emitting CO2, NOx, and particulates into the air. Stillstrom’s offshore charging technology offers a sustainable alternative by allowing vessels to draw power from a stationary offshore unit, eliminating the need to burn fossil fuels while waiting in line. Through their partnership, Stillstrom and the ACP will conduct a joint feasibility study to assess the potential of offshore charging solutions in the region, focusing on reducing emissions, improving air quality, and supporting the broader decarbonization strategy of the Panama Canal.

The collaboration between Stillstrom and the Panama Canal Authority aims to set a precedent for sustainable shipping practices on major trade routes. By leading this initiative, the Panama Canal demonstrates that sustainable shipping is not merely an ambition but a practical and achievable goal. This joint effort underscores the commitment of both parties to exploring innovative solutions to reduce emissions and promote environmental sustainability in the maritime industry.
