The Scottish Government has announced a £16 million investment for the 2026/27 financial year to bolster Scotland’s marine economy. Applications for the Marine Fund Scotland are now open, aimed at enhancing the marine environment and supporting crucial sectors like fishing and processing. This funding seeks to promote long-term sustainability and job security in coastal and island communities.
Rural Affairs Secretary Mairi Gougeon made the announcement during a visit to Dunbar Harbour, which has previously received grants for safety improvements. She highlighted that since 2021, the Marine Fund Scotland has allocated over £69 million to 390 projects, facilitating a total investment of £121 million and positively impacting jobs and communities across the country. Gougeon encouraged those with innovative projects in marine industries to apply for funding.
The expanded fund incorporates Scotland’s share of the UK-wide Fishing and Coastal Growth Fund, although Gougeon criticized the UK Government’s allocation of just 7.78% of the £360 million fund to Scotland. She emphasized the need for a reassessment of this decision, as Scotland previously received a more substantial share while part of the EU.
Last year, £14 million was distributed among 60 projects in various marine sectors, supporting initiatives that improved safety training and assisted young fishermen in acquiring vessels. For eligibility details and application procedures, interested parties can visit the Marine Fund Scotland website, with the application deadline set for May 15.
