A recent study by Thetius and Marcura reveals that the maritime industry is struggling with AI adoption, remaining in early experimental phases despite widespread enthusiasm. The report, titled “Beyond the Hype: What the maritime industry really thinks about AI,” gathered over 130 survey responses and interviews, showing that while 82% of professionals are optimistic about AI, 37% have experienced failures in AI projects, and only 11% have formal scaling policies.

Key findings indicate that 97% believe AI can significantly reduce manual workflow inefficiencies, yet concerns persist about overreliance on technology. Many professionals prefer AI as a recommendation tool, with 70% insisting that humans should make final decisions. Training gaps and a lack of transparent governance processes hinder scaling efforts, as only 17% of respondents have clear decision-making protocols for AI.

Despite these challenges, the pressure to modernize and the establishment of trusted vendor relationships are accelerating AI adoption. Companies are increasingly integrating AI into navigation and cargo operations, but financial constraints and data privacy concerns remain significant barriers. To successfully scale AI, organizations must prioritize robust governance, invest in industry-specific tools, and maintain human oversight in decision-making processes.
