At the Women Forward Summit on March 10, organized by the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises (SEV), Melina Travlos, President of the Union of Greek Shipowners, emphasized the importance of enhancing gender equality and increasing the visibility of women in various sectors. During a leadership dialogue titled “Institutions, Leadership and Equality in a Changing World,” she pointed out the persistent challenges women face in balancing personal and professional expectations.

Reflecting on her experiences in the shipping industry, Travlos shared her journey in a field traditionally dominated by men, where she often felt like an exception. She asserted that there should be no distinction between men and women regarding capability or professional worth; rather, the focus should be on providing equal opportunities and fostering mutual trust. Travlos called for a shift in mindset, particularly within maritime professions, to ensure women are treated equally in all professional roles, including at sea.

In her closing remarks, Travlos drew a parallel between the shipping industry and women’s strength, advocating for both to gain greater visibility in today’s society. She argued that increased recognition would highlight their significant contributions to the economy and society. According to a recent survey by the International Maritime Organization and the Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association, women represent just under 19% of the workforce, with a mere 1% in seafaring roles, underscoring the need for progress in gender representation.
