Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has made a significant advancement in the use of green hydrogen by successfully supplying it onshore in Tokyo from the demonstration yacht Winz Maru as part of the Wind Hunter Project. This groundbreaking achievement marks the first time in the world that a ship has provided green hydrogen for onshore use, produced while underway. MOL conducted a demonstration test with the Winz Maru in Omura Bay, Sasebo City, between FY 2021 and FY 2023, successfully completing all phases of hydrogen production, storage, and usage onboard.
The Winz Maru has simplified the process of handling and transporting hydrogen by converting green hydrogen to methylcyclohexane (MCH) onboard the vessel in Tokyo Bay. To ensure an adequate supply, MOL has modified the MCH tanks and added turbine generators to the vessel. Safety measures have also been implemented to account for the rougher sea conditions in Tokyo Bay compared to Omura Bay. MOL plans to continue its green hydrogen production activities in Tokyo Bay, aiming to produce approximately 100 Nm3 of hydrogen or the equivalent of about 200 liters of MCH in FY 2025.
Looking ahead, MOL is focused on further developing the hydrogen value chain domestically and aims to construct and commercialize a large demonstration vessel for the Wind Hunter project as early as the 2030s. The company is committed to advancing green hydrogen production activities in Tokyo Bay, supplying electricity to various facilities in the central breakwater area of Tokyo. By leveraging the capabilities of the Winz Maru and continuing to innovate in the field of green hydrogen, MOL is paving the way for a more sustainable future in maritime transportation.
