The Nuclear Energy Maritime Organization (NEMO) has been granted NGO advisory status at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and invited to participate in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference meetings. This milestone significantly advances NEMO’s mission to ensure the safe and sustainable use of nuclear energy in maritime settings.
With its new status, NEMO can contribute its expertise to global discussions on nuclear technologies in shipping and offshore energy systems. This includes involvement in the IAEA’s Atlas initiative, which aims to establish a regulatory framework for nuclear energy at sea, set to launch in 2025. NEMO will provide technical knowledge and strategic insights to help shape the future of maritime nuclear energy.
Dr. Mamdouh el-Shanawany, NEMO’s chairman, emphasized the importance of this achievement in addressing global decarbonization and energy security goals. NEMO’s advisory role will enhance regulatory conditions and security standards for mobile nuclear energy systems, reinforcing its commitment to fostering international cooperation for a low-carbon maritime future.
NEMO’s new status marks a significant step in strengthening its global role in the maritime sector, according to the Maritime Gateway, a leading news portal in South Asia.
