Italian start-up Newcleo, in collaboration with shipbuilder Fincantieri and design firm Pininfarina, has introduced concepts for a new generation of small fission power plants aimed at revolutionizing energy for shipping and other sectors. Displayed at a prominent Italian design fair, this fourth-generation nuclear reactor aims to reshape the public perception of nuclear energy. Launched in September 2021 with over €537 million in private funding, Newcleo is focused on developing small modular lead-cooled fast reactors, which they believe represent the future of fission technology.

The lead-cooled fast reactor is designed to address the challenges associated with traditional nuclear power, featuring passive safety systems that minimize accident risks. This innovative reactor can also reduce nuclear waste through a multi-cycle system, generating clean and virtually limitless energy. Newcleo’s ultracompact 200 MWe module promises enhanced energy density and safety, as liquid lead would solidify upon cooling during an accident, containing radiation effectively.

Since 2023, Newcleo has partnered with Fincantieri and RINA to explore applications for ship propulsion. Their concept involves a mini reactor producing 30 MW of electricity, requiring infrequent refueling and easy replacement at the end of its life cycle. Pininfarina’s creative vision incorporates sustainable design elements, showcased at the Venice Biennale with a striking 18-foot fiberglass structure, promoting a modern narrative around nuclear energy. Newcleo is also pursuing strategic acquisitions to bolster its capabilities in nuclear engineering and waste management as it moves toward commercialization.
