Nigeria’s Minister of Marine and Blue Economy Advocates Key Budget Priorities for 2025 to Boost Maritime Sector

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has called on key agencies under the ministry, such as the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), to ensure that the 2025 budget has a significant impact on the marine industry in Nigeria. During a budget review session in Abuja, the Minister emphasized the importance of aligning budget proposals with the National Policy on Marine and Blue Economy and the National Development Plan for 2021-2025. He expressed confidence that the budget proposals will help advance Nigeria’s marine and blue economy potential.

Oyetola highlighted the vast potential of the marine and blue economy sector for national development, including economic growth, job creation, and environmental stewardship. He stressed the need to invest resources in strengthening maritime surveillance systems, operations, and enforcement of maritime laws. The Minister also emphasized the importance of enhancing capacity in aquaculture, fishing ports, and combating illegal fishing activities. Additionally, he called for a focus on areas like oceanographic research, renewable marine energy, and climate resilience technologies to drive sustainable growth in the sector.

In discussing the draft National Policy on Marine and Blue Economy, the Minister underscored its significance as a roadmap for sustainable management of marine resources, climate adaptation, technological innovation, and enhanced governance in the sector. He emphasized the policy’s alignment with international best practices and sustainable development goals, particularly SDG 14. The heads of various agencies, including NPA, NIMASA, and the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, attended the session, demonstrating a collective commitment to advancing Nigeria’s marine and blue economy.
