Norway is actively promoting the development of new technologies aimed at maritime decarbonization, which will also foster job creation. The Enova program recently announced its fourth round of grants, allocating around $76 million to projects focused on hydrogen and ammonia as marine fuels, along with ammonia storage facilities. Enova SF, under Norway’s Ministry of Climate and Environment, emphasizes technology and market development, particularly in the shipping sector, which is crucial for the country’s future.
Minister for Climate and Environment Andreas Bjelland Eriksen stated, “Norway must be at the forefront of the transition at sea,” highlighting the importance of supporting innovative maritime projects. In this funding round, Enova selected four hydrogen-powered and two ammonia-powered ships for support, with approximately NOK 510 million ($50 million) for hydrogen projects and NOK 253 million ($25 million) for ammonia initiatives.
Among the recipients, LH2 Shipping and Møre Maritime are developing hydrogen-powered vessels, while Amon Maritime is advancing plans for ammonia-fueled bulk carriers. Amon’s CTO noted that medium-sized gas carriers are particularly suited for ammonia propulsion, making them a viable target for adoption. Enova continues to support various technologies, including battery electrification and biogas production, to enhance sustainability in maritime transport.
