The Nautical Institute and the Maritime Search and Rescue Council launched a new Maritime Search and Rescue Endorsement Scheme (MSARES) on July 1, aimed at enhancing the skills of crew and commanders on Search and Rescue (SAR) vessels. This initiative recognizes the specialized competencies needed for effective operations in high-pressure environments.

Successful participants will earn certification that supports career advancement and voluntary SAR efforts. The scheme includes practical tasks verified by trainers or SAR Vessel Masters, covering vital topics such as SAR navigation, incident command, crew management, communication, and safety procedures.

There are two pathways within the scheme: one for commanders, focusing on strategic oversight and coordination, and another for crew members, emphasizing practical skills like deck operations and emergency procedures. Both tracks require a strong grasp of SAR protocols and teamwork.

Candidates can progress at their own pace, supported by the Nautical Institute Academy and the Maritime Search and Rescue Council. This initiative aims to establish global standards in SAR operations, enhancing individual competencies and strengthening international SAR capabilities.
