NYK and the Hong Kong Police Force recently conducted a counterterrorism drill on board NYK’s NYK Daniella, a 210-meter, 2,664-TEU containership. The drill, which took place in Hong Kong’s territorial waters, lasted approximately an hour. The scenario involved terrorists entering the vessel by boat, prompting Hong Kong special forces to search and suppress the threat. Throughout the exercise, all parties, including the crew and the ship-management company, collaborated to verify response procedures. This marked the first joint drill with the Hong Kong Police Force since 2011.
The NYK Daniella, owned by Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha, boasts a total length of 210.00 meters and an overall width of 30.1 meters. With a draft of 11.52 meters, the vessel has the capacity to carry up to 2,664 TEUs. Registered in Singapore, the NYK Daniella is well-equipped to handle various maritime operations efficiently and effectively.
The successful completion of the counterterrorism drill underscores the importance of preparedness and coordination in safeguarding vessels and their crew from potential security threats. By engaging in such exercises, stakeholders in the maritime industry can enhance their ability to respond effectively to emergencies and protect the safety and security of all onboard. The collaboration between NYK and the Hong Kong Police Force sets a positive example for future joint initiatives aimed at enhancing maritime security.
