NYK and TB Global Technologies Ltd. (TBG) have received approval in principle (AiP) from Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) for their ship-to-ship supply of fuel ammonia. This certification was awarded at Gastech in Houston last week. The key feature of their system is an emergency-release mechanism developed by TBG, which allows for instant disconnection between an ammonia-fueled vessel and an ammonia bunkering vessel (ABV) in case of an emergency.
To obtain the AiP, NYK shared design data for their in-house developed ABV and provided expertise on the handling of ammonia. This knowledge was gained from NYK’s experience in the ammonia-transport business and from operating Kaguya, Japan’s first LNG bunkering vessel. Kaguya is managed by Central LNG Marine Fuel Corporation, where NYK holds the largest share. The aim is to enhance the safety and operability of the equipment for ammonia fuel supply.
The collaboration between NYK and TBG represents a significant step towards the adoption of ammonia as a marine fuel. The development of an emergency-release system and the sharing of expertise in handling ammonia demonstrate a commitment to safety and innovation in the maritime industry. This AiP from ClassNK validates the efforts made by NYK and TBG in advancing sustainable fuel solutions for the shipping sector.
