A sailing yacht named Oceanview sank off the coast of Portugal after being struck multiple times by a pod of orcas. The incident occurred on September 13, 2025, approximately five miles from Fonte de Telha beach. The yacht, owned by the Nautic Squad club, was carrying five individuals, all of whom were safely rescued by another vessel from the same club before Oceanview went under.
Footage from the Mercedes-Benz Oceanic Lounge, which was on a dolphin-watching trip nearby, captured the dramatic moment when the orcas collided with the yacht, leading to its sinking. This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding orca interactions with vessels in the region.
Later that same day, a separate incident took place about 12 miles northeast of the Bay of Cascais, where four people required assistance from lifeguards after reportedly encountering the same pod of orcas. According to orcas.pt, a tracking website for orca activity in Portugal and Spain, this month has seen at least five similar attacks.
These events are part of a series of recent incidents involving orcas, prompting scientists to further investigate the behavior of these marine mammals. The increased frequency of such encounters raises questions about orca interactions with boats in coastal waters.
