The Protected Transfer System (PTX) developed by Safe STS and Gall Thomson is a significant advancement in the safe handling of crude oil transfer at sea. This system has been successfully integrated into hundreds of offshore ship-to-ship (STS) operations and is now mandated by a growing number of jurisdictions and oil majors. STS operations pose risks of spills, physical harm to personnel, and damage to equipment. Safe STS has developed technological capabilities to enhance risk management in offshore operations, aligning with modern standards and guidelines.

The PTX’s sealing mechanisms provide a tight seal during a breakaway, preventing crude oil spills and aligning with global environmental standards to protect marine ecosystems. It ensures safe, rapid, on-demand remote disconnection during crude oil transfer, easily integrating into existing STS systems. The PTX Release is lightweight, transportable, and can be installed within minutes, enhancing cross-operational use and allowing for permanent deck installation if desired.

In emergency scenarios, the PTX enables a rapid, remote release through a Reflex High-Pressure Unit (HPU) to minimize environmental damage and keep personnel safe. It prevents hose rupture or manifold damage during unintentional breakaway events and can be reset within 30 minutes. The PTX has been adopted by industry stakeholders and is set to roll out globally through Safe STS, offering a reliable solution for safe and efficient crude oil transfer at sea.
