A global maritime company, Safesea Group, is calling for an independent international investigation into a recent attack on its oil tanker, MT Safesea Vishnu, which resulted in the death of an Indian crew member. The incident, which occurred on March 11 while the vessel was operating in Iraqi waters near Basra, is seen as a significant threat to global shipping and trade stability. Chairman Dr. S V Anchan noted that the attack appeared to be a coordinated operation, raising serious concerns about maritime security.
The tanker was attacked by an alleged Iranian suicide boat while anchored for routine loading operations. Following the assault, which killed 55-year-old Deonandan Singh, the company highlighted unusual movements of high-speed boats around the anchored vessels a day prior, suggesting reconnaissance efforts. Safesea emphasized the need for a transparent investigation, possibly under the International Maritime Organisation and the United Nations, to address the implications for international shipping and crew safety.
In light of the attack, Safesea is urging a thorough review of coastal security measures and vessel monitoring protocols in Iraqi waters. The company expressed gratitude for the swift response from Iraqi authorities but stressed the importance of vigilance and preventive security measures. Amid regional tensions affecting maritime corridors, concerns over crew safety and operational risks have intensified.
In a show of respect, Dr. Anchan accompanied the flight transporting Singh’s remains back to India, ensuring that his final journey was conducted with dignity. He emphasized that the priority in shipping should always be human life over cargo or cost.
