Twenty-five Scottish companies, including established firms, will receive a portion of £4.8 million in funding from the latest round of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC) to develop clean maritime fuels and technologies such as ammonia, hydrogen, and electric solutions. This funding is part of a total of £32.6 million allocated to Scotland through the CMDC program, aimed at decarbonizing the maritime sector.

Maritime Minister Mike Kane expressed enthusiasm about the investment, highlighting its role in fostering skills, innovation, and manufacturing in Scotland. He emphasized the importance of this funding in achieving net-zero shipping by 2050, which will contribute to cleaner sea travel and bolster coastal economies.

Successful initiatives include the installation of electric chargepoint networks at ports and demonstrations of electric vessels and green hydrogen systems. During a visit to Clydeport, Kane met with workers from the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland, focusing on scaling up the manufacturing of the FastRig windsail, a technology that can significantly reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

Secretary of State for Scotland Ian Murray praised the funding as a testament to Scotland’s industrial heritage combined with modern green technology, positioning Scottish businesses as leaders in maritime decarbonization while creating jobs and revitalizing coastal communities.
