The Thai Ha 8888 cargo vessel, carrying 5,900 tonnes of cement, sank near Lang Co in Thua Thien Hue Province around 12:30 AM on October 27 due to severe weather conditions, including rough seas and strong winds, as reported by the Chan May Border Guard Station.
The captain, Nguyen Van Dong, along with seven crew members, abandoned the ship, donning life jackets and escaping on a life raft. By 3:20 AM, the Long Son 38 vessel located and rescued all eight crew members, safely bringing them to shore in Danang City.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the crew did not have time to close the valve containing 15,000 litres of diesel oil before leaving the ship. Authorities are actively monitoring the area for potential fuel leaks and are preparing environmental response measures.
Rescue teams from Thua Thien Hue Province, in collaboration with the Border Guard Command and the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre Region II, are currently working to locate the sunken vessel, assess the situation, and devise plans for salvage operations.
