Leading shipping companies have united to address ocean plastic pollution with the launch of the Maritime Association for Clean Seas (MACS). Founded by Seven Clean Seas (SCS), this new alliance includes major players like Berge Bulk and X-Press Feeders, aiming to significantly reduce plastic and operational waste within the maritime industry.

Although the maritime sector contributes minimally to ocean plastic pollution, issues such as cargo losses and inadequate waste management can have serious environmental impacts. MACS seeks to advance best practices and foster collaboration across the industry, thereby playing a crucial role in minimizing plastic leakage and safeguarding marine environments.

Building on the International Maritime Organization’s Plastic Marine Litter Action Plan, MACS responds to the urgent need for coordinated action against plastic pollution. The initiative aims to unify maritime stakeholders in reducing plastic usage, sharing best practices, and inspiring change in sectors with larger plastic footprints.

The association’s goals include sustainable material use, waste measurement, and improved waste reception at ports, aligning with the IMO’s 2030 Action Plan. With a mission to recover 100 million kilograms of plastic and enhance 200,000 lives by 2030, MACS exemplifies how collaboration can drive significant environmental change.
