The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has collaborated with the Government Technology Agency of Singapore (GovTech) to develop Singapore’s first Maritime Digital Twin. This innovative tool aims to optimize port operations, improve energy efficiency, and reduce emissions. Launched on March 24, 2025, the Maritime Digital Twin is a simulation model that integrates real-time data from vessels, port operations, and environmental sensors. By utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and predictive analytics, the digital twin enhances decision-making and management of maritime operations in Singapore waters.

One of the key features of the Maritime Digital Twin is its ability to support safety management and emergency response. The simulation model aids in risk assessments for incidents like oil spills and accidental gas releases, enhancing overall safety protocols. Additionally, the digital twin allows companies and researchers to collaborate with MPA to develop and test new operating concepts and digital solutions before implementing them in real-world scenarios. Pilot testing using the digital twin is set to begin in the second half of 2025, showcasing MPA’s commitment to driving innovation in the maritime industry.

MPA’s digitalization efforts extend beyond the Maritime Digital Twin project. The authority has partnered with Malaysia’s MISC Berhad for innovation, research, and development initiatives, as well as test-bedding activities. Furthermore, MPA has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Microsoft to explore the use of AI and digital twins for optimizing vessel route planning. This collaboration aims to enhance safety, reduce emissions, and streamline vessel turnaround times in port operations through just-in-time arrivals. These initiatives highlight MPA’s dedication to leveraging technology for sustainable and efficient maritime practices.
