The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has collaborated with various organizations to launch the enhanced Tripartite Maritime Training Award (TMTA). This initiative aims to support mid-career individuals in acquiring the necessary skills and certifications to serve as 3rd Officers and 5th Engineers. The training duration under the enhanced TMTA has been reduced from 31 months to 22 months, with a focus on maintaining high training standards through a streamlined curriculum and advanced ship simulators.

The TMTA provides financial support and skills training for individuals looking to transition into a maritime career at sea, with opportunities for career advancement ashore. This collaborative effort between unions, industry, and government demonstrates the commitment to equipping individuals with the skills needed for a sustainable career in the maritime industry. The enhanced TMTA offers a second chance for those seeking a fulfilling profession in the maritime sector.

To support aspiring seafarers during the training phase, monthly allowances will be increased and co-funded by MPA, e2i, and SMOU. A structured mentorship program will also be introduced to provide personalized guidance and support for cadets as they navigate their seafaring career. This initiative aims to open doors for mid-career individuals to embark on a meaningful path in the maritime industry, ensuring they have the necessary skills and support to succeed. Applications for the TMTA will open in April 2025, with a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance the program set to be signed in March 2025.
