The Untold Story of MV Kairali to Come Alive in New Movie

Filmmaker Jude Anthany Joseph, known for ‘2018’, will direct ‘MV Kairali: The Enduring Mystery’ for Confluence Media. The film recounts the 1979 maritime tragedy involving the cargo ship MV Kairali, which disappeared while transporting iron ore from Goa to Germany, leaving 51 crew members unaccounted for. The project is based on ‘The Master Mariner’, a book by Lt Col Thomas Joseph about his father, the ship’s captain. Both English and Malayalam editions will launch in Kochi on August 25.

The MV Kairali vanished on July 3, 1979, during its journey to Djibouti. Among those lost were 23 Keralites, leading to immense suffering for their families. The ensuing investigation revealed complex layers of political and corporate intrigue, highlighting the challenges faced by the victims’ families in seeking answers.

Joseph aims to honor the lives lost through the film, which he hopes will provide closure to grieving families. Author Thomas Joseph expressed that his book seeks to bring resolution after 45 years of uncertainty, reflecting on the trauma experienced by families affected by the tragedy.

The screenplay will be co-written by Jude Anthany Joseph, American writer James Wright, and journalist Josy Joseph, who emphasizes the importance of telling the story of the families impacted by the loss, aiming to spark discussions on accountability and justice.
