Three Ships Attacked in Strait of Hormuz: Maritime Agencies Report

On March 1, 2026, maritime security agencies reported that three vessels were attacked in the Strait of Hormuz amid escalating tensions following Iranian retaliatory strikes against ongoing US-Israeli air raids. One incident involved a ship off Oman, which was hit by an unidentified projectile above the waterline. Initially, the engine room was reported to be on fire, but subsequent updates indicated that the fire was under control, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).

In a separate occurrence, another vessel was struck by a projectile, resulting in a fire that was later extinguished. This tanker, located about 17 nautical miles northwest of Mina Saqr in the UAE, plans to continue its journey. UKMTO also noted that a projectile exploded near a third vessel, approximately 35 nautical miles west of Sharjah, but all crew members were reported safe.

Iranian state television claimed that an oil tanker was “sinking” after being hit while navigating the Strait of Hormuz. The broadcaster displayed images of thick black smoke rising from the burning vessel. The Strait is a vital corridor for global oil trade, with a significant portion of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas passing through it. Recently, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards declared the shipping lane unsafe due to the ongoing attacks.
