The sixth round of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC) is currently open for bidders until April 16, 2025. This UK government-funded initiative aims to support the maritime industry in achieving net zero emissions. The competition invites UK-registered organizations to apply for a share of a £30 million fund to develop innovative clean maritime technologies and skills. Administered by Innovate UK on behalf of the Department for Transport’s UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions program, the CMDC awards funds in areas of green technology, decarbonization, and skills development.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) plays a crucial role in guiding the CMDC program, providing technical advice and insight to projects that progress innovative ideas and concepts. Previous rounds of the competition have funded projects focusing on future fuels like hydrogen and ammonia, electrification of vessels, and energy efficiency. The MCA’s involvement is particularly important when integrating innovative technologies with existing ships, such as supporting the integration and sea trials of a 20m wing sail developed by Smart Green Shipping.

In related news, the UK government recently announced a plan to decarbonize its fleet by 2050 while supporting coastal communities. British Maritime Minister Mike Kane unveiled the ambition for all vessels operating in UK waters to be carbon-free, with support provided for emission-free voyages. The plan emphasizes alternative fuels and infrastructure for charging or refueling vessels as part of the nation’s transition to sustainable energy sources. This initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to reducing emissions and supporting the maritime industry’s transition to cleaner technologies.
