The Sustainable Maritime Fuels Collaborative (SMF Collaborative) has been launched in the Pacific Northwest, with support from key organizations including Washington Maritime Blue, the Port of Seattle, and the Port of Tacoma. This initiative aims to promote the adoption of sustainable maritime fuels and zero-emission technologies in the region’s maritime industry, with the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. By aligning with international climate goals, the Collaborative seeks to enhance the competitiveness of the region in the global shipping industry.
Bringing together stakeholders from various sectors of the maritime industry, the SMF Collaborative focuses on developing standards, policies, and infrastructure to support the production and use of low- and zero-emission fuels. It also emphasizes workforce development and environmental justice by engaging with near-port communities and creating clean energy job opportunities. The initiative is funded in part by the Washington State Legislature and is currently in the early planning stages.
Over the next 18 months, a Founding Leadership Committee will work on refining the Collaborative’s mission, strategy, and organizational structure, with a formal report expected by June 2025. This collaborative effort is crucial in driving the transition towards sustainable maritime practices and contributing to the region’s overall environmental goals. Through partnerships and coordinated efforts, the SMF Collaborative aims to make a significant impact on reducing emissions and promoting cleaner energy solutions in the maritime sector.
