Ukraine has intensified its maritime offensive by executing a third sea drone attack on a Russian tanker, the Comoros-flagged Dashan, in the Black Sea. This action aims to disrupt Russia’s oil trade amidst ongoing tensions. Reports indicate that the Dashan was targeted while navigating through Ukraine’s exclusive economic zone and was empty at the time of the incident.
This latest strike comes closely on the heels of attacks on two other tankers, Kairos and Virat, indicating a coordinated strategy by Ukraine to challenge vessels suspected of carrying Russian oil in violation of Western sanctions. The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) confirmed the strike, releasing videos purportedly showing the drone attack and subsequent explosions.
The heightened frequency of these attacks has caused ripples in the maritime industry, particularly increasing war insurance costs for ships operating in the Black Sea. In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued stern warnings, threatening escalated strikes against Ukrainian targets and tankers associated with nations supporting Ukraine. He also indicated that Russia might restrict Ukraine’s maritime access.
The Black Sea serves as a vital trade corridor for grain, oil, and other products, linking several countries, including Bulgaria, Romania, and Turkey, while the shadow fleet of aging tankers plays a crucial role in Russia’s efforts to sidestep Western sanctions. Ukraine’s targeted strikes reflect a strategic aim to disrupt this illicit trade and exert economic pressure on Russia amid the ongoing conflict.
