A newly updated Rescue Guide has been collaboratively created by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS). This guide aims to provide essential legal guidance and practical procedures for the swift disembarkation of individuals rescued at sea, addressing their unique needs, particularly those of refugees and migrants.
The guide emphasizes the importance of timely action in ensuring the safety and well-being of rescued persons. It offers a framework to navigate the complexities of maritime law and humanitarian obligations, reinforcing the responsibility of states and maritime actors to respond effectively to emergencies at sea.
Building upon a previous edition released in 2015, this updated version incorporates lessons learned and evolving best practices in maritime rescue operations. It serves as a crucial resource for governments, NGOs, and maritime professionals involved in rescue missions, aiming to enhance cooperation and coordination during such critical situations.
By focusing on the specific challenges faced by vulnerable populations, the guide underscores the commitment of international organizations to uphold human rights and ensure that no one is left behind in their moment of need.
