The Canadian Marine Careers Foundation (CMCF) has published the “Canadian Seafarers Pathway Study,” highlighting significant labor and skills shortages in the marine transportation sector.
The report emphasizes the urgent need to attract and train new talent, revealing that domestic vessel operators must recruit 8,300 workers by 2029. This figure represents over 30% of the current workforce, necessary to meet industry demands and offset retirements.
Julia Fields, Executive Director of CMCF, stated, “Canada’s marine sector is vital to the national economy, contributing directly and supporting various industries and communities dependent on efficient marine transportation for passengers and cargo.”
The findings underscore the critical importance of addressing these workforce challenges to ensure the sector’s sustainability and growth.
