Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) announced its first international acquisition, securing a controlling stake in Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDPLC), Sri Lanka’s largest shipbuilding and repair facility, for up to $52.96 million. This acquisition marks a significant step for MDL, enabling it to expand its influence in the Indian Ocean Region, a vital maritime corridor.
CDPLC, located within the Port of Colombo, offers MDL a strategic advantage, facilitating growth in its global maritime ambitions. MDL aims to transition from a domestic shipbuilder to a regional maritime player, aligning its efforts with the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, thereby reinforcing India’s maritime presence in the region.
Founded in 1974, Colombo Dockyard has established itself as Sri Lanka’s premier engineering and shipbuilding facility, successfully delivering military and civilian vessels to both local and international clients. With its access to deep-water harbor and a skilled workforce, the dockyard is well-equipped for ship repair, new construction, heavy engineering, and offshore services.
This acquisition signals MDL’s commitment to enhancing its capabilities and expanding its operational footprint beyond India, marking a transformative phase for the company.
