The Ministry of Trade Union for Ports and Shipping is committed to supporting the development of Kollam Port, as announced by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in the Lok Sabha. The aim is to enable Kollam Port to accommodate luxury, freight, and passenger ships, while also establishing shipping services to Minicoy Island in Lakshadweep. The central government has financed the port, with development projects completed through its financial assistance.
The state government holds responsibility for further enhancing Kollam Port. To facilitate the introduction of various ship types, it must draft a proposal alongside the State Marine Board. Minister Sonowal urged the maritime authority to align its proposal with the Sagarmala project, which is designed to optimize port potential.
Incorporating Kollam Port into the Sagarmala project could provide essential financial resources for extensive upgrades. MP Premachandran has also requested harbor officials to expedite a comprehensive development proposal to the Federal Government. This proposal is critical for the early development of passenger, freight, and luxury ship infrastructure at the port. Relevant authorities have been notified to collaborate on this initiative to bolster the port’s future.
