On March 21, 2026, Bloomberg reported that the United States has diminished Iran’s capability to threaten maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. This follows a targeted operation where the US military bombed an underground facility along Iran’s coast. According to Admiral Brad Cooper, head of US Central Command, this site was crucial for housing anti-ship cruise missiles and mobile launchers.
Admiral Cooper stated in a video posted on X that the US would continue to pursue similar targets, emphasizing that Iranian threats to freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz have been reduced. The military operation also included the destruction of Iranian intelligence support locations and missile radar systems that monitored maritime movements.
Despite these efforts, shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz has seen significant delays since the onset of conflict three weeks ago, impacting a vital transit point for about 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas. This disruption has led to soaring global energy prices, prompting the Trump administration to work urgently to lower gas prices in response.
