Sri Vijaya Puram, June 8: On June 4, 2025, the Andaman Nicobar Command showcased its commitment to maritime safety by averting a potential disaster at Battimalv Island. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Sri Vijaya Puram had received reports about the Merchant Vessel Fotex, which was drifting due to engine failure while en route from Thailand to the UAE, posing a significant threat to the ecologically sensitive A&N Islands.

Upon receiving the alert on June 1, the Coast Guard Regional Headquarters monitored the vessel’s situation and requested the owner to arrange a tugboat. Unfortunately, no assistance was provided in time, and the vessel drifted closer to the islands, with Car Nicobar, Teressa, and Battimalv identified as risk zones. On June 4, the Fotex issued a distress signal when it was just 10 miles from Battimalv Island.

The MRCC acted swiftly, dispatching the Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Vijit, which was nearby. Despite challenging weather conditions, the crew demonstrated exceptional seamanship and professionalism, successfully towing the vessel away from the coastline. This timely intervention prevented the vessel from grounding and averted an environmental crisis, showcasing the effective collaboration within the Andaman Nicobar Command.
