On November 12, the World Maritime University (WMU) and Sharjah Maritime Academy (SMA) formalized their partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) alongside a Collaborative Activities Agreement. This initiative aims to enhance global maritime research and educational programs. The MoU sets the stage for a long-term collaboration focused on maritime research, education, training, and capacity development.

To facilitate this partnership, the Collaborative Activities Agreement details a series of academic and research initiatives that are set to commence in 2025 and 2026. Professor Maximo Q. Mejia Jr., President of WMU, emphasized that collaborating with SMA will enhance academic influence and foster the professional growth of maritime leaders in the Gulf region, an area increasingly pivotal to the future of global shipping.

Under the terms of the Agreement, SMA and WMU will engage in three joint research projects. These include the Dhow Project, which examines informal sail-powered maritime transport in the Indian Ocean; the Seafarer Supply Project, focusing on global seafarer supply and training; and the Proactive Maritime Traffic Management Project, aimed at improving maritime traffic safety through risk-based models.

Dr. Hashim Abdullah bin Sharhan Al Zaabi, Chancellor of SMA, remarked that this MoU represents a significant milestone for the academy, enabling the establishment of global partnerships that enhance research and educational capabilities. It prepares graduates to not only support the UAE’s maritime goals but also to lead innovative transformations in the blue economy.
