World Maritime Day 2025 will focus on the ocean, highlighting the maritime industry’s efforts to safeguard marine environments. Observed globally on September 25, this year’s theme emphasizes reducing pollution, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, and preventing biodiversity loss. IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez stated that the organization has long sought to ensure the shipping sector contributes positively, facilitating global solutions through regulations and collaboration among diverse stakeholders.

Recent significant developments include the impending enactment of the High Seas Treaty, aimed at conserving marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdictions. Additionally, commitments made during June’s UN Ocean Conference underline shared responsibilities to protect the ocean. UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged the maritime community to commit to sustainable maritime industries and ensure that the blue economy fosters inclusive growth.
