The Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) has achieved a significant milestone by developing the world’s first commercial ammonia-based marine engine, marking a breakthrough in the shipping industry’s decarbonization efforts. The innovative seven-cylinder model, named 7UEC50LSJA-HPSCR, was completed on August 30 after successful test runs at J-ENG’s Akashi plant, under the guidance of notable partners including NYK Line and Classnk.

This engine operates on a dual-fuel system, using both ammonia and heavy fuel oil. Testing results confirmed its safe operation, with Classnk validating compliance with stringent environmental and safety standards. Notably, the engine demonstrated a remarkable 95% reduction in greenhouse gases, alongside significantly lower nitrogen oxide emissions compared to conventional heavy oil engines.

The engine is set for installation on a medium-sized ammonia gas carrier currently under construction at the Japan Marine United Ariake shipyard, with anticipated service beginning in 2026. Extensive research and development efforts included over 1,700 hours of prototype and full engine testing, focusing on efficiency and safety.

J-ENG’s advancements position ammonia as a viable marine fuel, with plans for larger engine models and a new factory aimed at boosting production capacity by 2028, supported by the Japanese GX economic transition bonds.
