Northern Offshore Services has made a significant step towards sustainability in the offshore industry by introducing the world’s first crew transfer vessel (CTV) powered entirely by biomethanol. The M/V Transporter, a 25-meter high-speed catamaran converted from A-Class to T-Class, is designed to efficiently transport technicians and light cargo with 24 passenger seating. This innovative vessel represents N-O-S’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and advancing decarbonization efforts in the industry.
In collaboration with Vestas, the vessel will be chartered to explore the potential of biomethanol-powered vessels in reducing emissions from offshore service operations. Biomethanol, a clean and renewable fuel derived from sustainable biomass, is the sole power source for the Transporter. To ensure a stable supply, N-O-S has secured biomethanol through their supplier Northern Energy & Supply (N-E-S). This move signifies a shift towards more sustainable practices in the maritime sector.
David Kristensson, Group CEO of Northern Offshore Group, expressed pride in operating the world’s first single-fuel biomethanol CTV, setting a new standard for sustainability in the maritime industry. Vestas, a long-term customer, is also committed to investing in sustainable solutions and is leading the wind industry in testing emission-reducing technologies. Lisa Ekstrand, Head and VP of Sustainability at Vestas, emphasized the importance of alliances and commitments to further explore low-emission vessel operations. The vessel’s details include seating for 24 passengers, an aluminum hull, and patented high-performance fender arrangements.
